Position Description: Dean of Students

DESCRIPTION:
The position of Dean of Students was established for the purpose of enriching and enhancing the schools ability to maintain an environment that meets the educational and emotional needs of all our students in a safe environment. To this end, the Dean will be responsible for ensuring that high behavioral expectations are consistently communicated and maintained through the school. The Dean of Students will work with leadership teams, teachers, parents and administrators to ensure a strong achievement-based environment, centered around the culture and core values of the school, is maintained at all times. The Dean of Students is primarily responsible for disciplinary issues and achievement of these expectations will directly contribute to the school’s successful achievement of its mission and objectives. This individual will report to the Director of Operations.
ESSENTIAL POSITION FUNCTION:
- Think critically about academic and non-academic issues, in order to ensure that students are getting the support they need to maintain high levels of performance.
- Collaborate with administration, teachers, parents, and volunteers to ensure that all students are successful in the academically rigorous setting.
- Work closely with administration to establish and maintain a positive achievement-oriented culture which reflects our core values.
- Observe classrooms to evaluate and assist staff in maintaining high levels of academic and classroom management expectations consistent with established policies and culture. Assist administration with formal evaluations for certified and classified staff.
- Coaches staff as needed to establish a strong classroom community that has clear expectations and routines.
- Works with staff to ensure they are consistent in communicating with parents and/or guardians.
- Monitors behavior pull-out and in-school suspensions as well as after school detention.
- Leads professional development opportunities focused on instruction, classroom management, school culture and parent involvement as it pertains to discipline and/or instruction.
- Maintains systems for documenting and communicating behavioral issues as well as ensuring the contact log is correctly utilized by staff as it pertains to discipline.
- Make recommendations to the Principal and Executive Director for chronic discipline matters.
- Assist in the supervision of breakfast and lunch programs.
- Collaborate with the faculty in the enforcement and implementation of the rules and other regulations of the parent/student handbook to effect positive student behavior in the school.
- Supervise and assist in the development, implementation, distribution and orientation of the student handbook to ensure all stakeholders are aware of the policies and procedures of the school.
- Conduct research on discipline and welfare with parents, faculty, councilors, and support service personnel in order to make recommendations to the Executive Director and Principal for revising discipline policy or procedures.
- Assist in the supervision during student arrival and departure of students in order to minimize confusion and help ensure student safety.
- Serve as a backup for classroom instruction on an as needed basis.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Knowledge is required to write a wide variety of manuals using prescribed formats, and/or present information to a wide variety of stakeholders, establishing and maintaining documentation for audits related to instruction and discipline, updating and maintaining the parent/student handbook, and administering appropriate disciplinary actions. Additionally, this position requires knowledge of community agencies and/or programs that provide services for adolescents, adolescent behavior issues and psychology, professional development and training trends for staff, students and other stakeholders, building safety and security, and knowledge of operational procedures for maintaining and maximizing student learning in a safe environment.
- Skills are required to perform multiple tasks with a potential need to upgrade skills in order to meet changing position conditions. Specific skill-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the position include but are not limited to: operating standard office equipment, using pertinent software (i.e. Google Docs, Google Sheets, MSWord, MS Excel); and preparing and maintaining accurate records within the Infinite Campus platform, as it relates to student records and parental contact.
- Ability is required to schedule a significant number of activities, meetings, and/or events; gather and/or collect data; and use position-related equipment. Flexibility is required to work independently and work with others in a variety of circumstances, work with data utilizing defined and similar processes. The ability to work with a diverse group of individuals and/or groups is also required, and the individual must also have the ability to problem solve using data and may require independent interpretation of the data, as well as create an action plan under the guidance of the Principal. Specific ability-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the position include; maintaining confidentiality, meeting deadlines and schedules; working with detailed information/data; communicating with diverse groups and willingness to attend, participate and lead training sessions. Additionally, the position requires continual improvement and professional growth.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
This individual reports directly to and works closely with the Director of Operations at Bromley East Charter School. The Dean of Students responsibilities include but are not limited to: working under limited supervision, following standardized practices and/or methods performing the positions essential functions, operating within a fast paced and occasionally stressful environment, tracking and maintaining records for discipline, communicating to a diverse audience and various stakeholders. Developing and maintaining a system of behavior management which is based on student needs. There is a continual opportunity to impact the school and the effectiveness and efficiency of the school. The Dean of Students is expected to uphold the highest standards of leadership to achieve and maintain an environment that is consistent with the school’s culture and core beliefs.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT:
The usual and customary methods of performing the position’s functions require the following physical demands: some lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling. Generally the position requires 50% sitting, 25% walking and 25% standing. Professional business attire is expected and required.
MINIMUM EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:
Applicants must hold a Bachelor’s degree with five (5) years of experience in a school setting.

Teaching License and Principal License
